Al Bartlett, the late Professor Emeritus in Nuclear Physics at the University of Colorado in Boulder“ is famous for his quote,

“The greatest shortcoming of the human race is our inability to understand the exponential function.”

Whether or not he is right, the exponential function and its curve are dominating and influencing your life these days. Their ramifications and power are everywhere from politics, to population, to technology, medicine and more.

You have heard me talk many times about the rapid changes swirling around us and most of these changes are following an exponential function or curve.

So what is an exponential curve, what does it look like and why does it matter to you?

Well, to do the geeky thing, a linear function is our familiar, comfortable, consistent straight line increasing over time. The 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 - a steady predictable increase.

Exponential functions are wild, as the line becomes a curve, with the rate of change doubling for each constant time - 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64.

If you aren’t aware of this function of exponentials and its consequences, well, in today's exponential world, you can quickly be left behind in the dust.

Wayne Gretzky's knows its practical outcome “I skate to where the puck is going to be not to where it has been” and fittingly, an exponential curve is often called a hockey stick curve.

Lewis Carroll, the author of Alice in Wonderland, also a mathematician, understood exponential curves.

In Alice In Wonderland, the Queen Of Hearts tell Alice - “My dear, here we must run as fast as we can, just to stay in place. And if you wish to go anywhere, you must run twice as fast as that.”

Why does this matter to you, as an entrepreneur?

Do you feel you are already running a marathon, flat out, on your Hamster Wheel of Life?

Do you have the reserve to double you running rate to stay in the same place, or quadruple, then octuple your running rate to move forward?

Is it time to find new strategies for new times to catch up with that increasingly, fast moving puck?
